A.G.B.U. Alex Manoogian Saturday School started in 1963. From the beginning, the school was sponsored by the late AGBU Life President Alex Manoogian and in appreciation the school was named after him.
During
the academic year the school functions every Saturday afternoon between 1:30 and 5pm, teaching Armenian subjects such as; Armenian language, History, Religion, Song, Music and Dance, Art, Recital and Theatre. The
school comprises of -- 3 Kindergarten classes, 7 Primary and 2 transitional classes for the HSC, where graduates from the A.G.B.U. Alexander Primary School together with Saturday School students, attend to
prepare for the HSC Armenian Language 2 unit exam.
The syllabus is based on a syllabus model developed by the Armenian Education Ministry for primary classes and adjusted according to the needs of the
Australian Environment and the Armenian Community. The study, although limited to the three hours per week, provides and effective means for:-
A... Strengthening the cohesion and solidarity among members of the Armenian Community B... Understanding and preserving the cultural heritage - the language, history, traditions, literature, arts and the
identity of the Armenian people C... Contributing, through the study of this heritage, to the cultural progress of the Armenian Community in Australia and enhancing Australia's multicultural image.
Course Content: Kindergarten: The Armenian Alphabet
In Kindergarten the course focuses on learning the alphabet. Teachers use oral, written and visual
resources. Music and dance are the perfect tools to enhance cultural awareness and diversity. At the end of the course, students should be able to read and write in Armenian.
Primary 1-6
(a) Linguistic Elements: students become familiar with linguistic elements and according to the levels implement them, viz-a-viz orthology / spelling / syntax and morphology / verb / conjunction / sentence and
phrase type / vocabulary. (b) Reading and writing: Homework (c) Literature: writers / poems (the syllabus uses only 20th century writer).
Year 7
Social, cultural, historical events and
other related issues such as the old and the new environment. The aim of the course is to prepare and direct the students for HSC Armenian 2-unit examination.Recently the school celebrated it's 35th Anniversary and
will continue to provide Armenian Education to future generations of Australian-Armenians.
